Ship's trip to Boppard

You experience the Rhine in a very gripping way, too, when travelling with the ship line 'Köln-Düsseldorfer' to Boppard. Forget the everyday stress! Enjoy to travel slowly. You will get impressions that can only be received from the ship's deck.

In Boppard, where you will stay for about 4 hours, you can go with the chair-lift to the 'Four-lakes-view' or to 'Gedeonseck', where you will have a unique view onto the Rhine.

Boppard, the Roman town, was originally a Celtic settlement. When the Romans had settled down here, emperor Julian had erected the giant castellum 'Bodobrica', which had gigantic dimensions for a Roman fortification in the 4th century. That the Roman castellum of Boppard was preserved so well is only due to the circumstance that it was not captured nor destroyed by enemies. Till today the erstwhile Roman street crossing is visible in the centre of Boppard. In the 5th century the once important thermal spa was converted by people of Boppard into a Christian church, the Severus church still existing today. The towers were utilised for residential purposes or converted into stables of livestock.

In the formerly electoral old castle the museum of local history of the town of Boppard is housed. Among the exhibits you can find the first laminated-wood-glued chair in the world that was made by cabinet-maker Michael Thonet of Boppard in 1836. Thonet has become famous with his Vienna coffee-house chairs. The Rhine promenade with numerous cafés, wine-taverns and souvenir shops invite for a stroll.

The Hunsrück train counts among the most charming mountainous routes of Germany and leads to the heights of the Hunsrück mountains. It is the steepest tracks of the German railway!
